Galway University Hospital has confirmed that a woman was found dead in one of its toilets earlier this month.

An investigation is underway into the incident, which took place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

The woman, thought to originally have been from Poland, was discovered in a locked disabled toilet in a public area close to the hospital’s Emergency Department.

The Connacht Tribune reports that she was in the toilet for up to ten hours and was found when the toilet was being serviced.

She entered the building unbeknownst to members of staff and was not a registered patient of the department or the hospital, said The Saolta Hospital Group which runs Galway University Hospital.

The case was referred to the Galway West coroner, Dr Ciarán McLoughlin.
