720 of Ireland’s finest female footballers are about to descend on Mayo

Niamh Maher

If you’re looking for some top class Gaelic Football this weekend, look no further.

The O’Connor Cup weekend kicks off today at GMIT Mayo in Castlebar, bringing 24 Higher Education Ladies Football teams together in what is sure to be a thrilling display of female athleticism.

GMIT Mayo is hosting the event and the fact that it’s the 30th anniversary of Higher Education Ladies Football makes it all the more special.

Sports Officer for GMIT Nigel Jennings told us he believes the event will have a hugely positive impact on the sporting and business sectors throughout Mayo;

“It will be an amazing occasion, GMIT are honoured to host the tournament here in the county. It’s a bit of a challenge for us to logistically manage it but we are looking forward to it and are well able to rise to the challenge, it will be a celebration of Ladies Gaelic Football and all that’s good in female sport.

The organisers are urging the public to come out and show their support this weekend and the live televised finals in Elverys MacHale Park on Sunday are a must-see. So throw on the jerseys, get out there, and support ladies football!

We want to wish all the teams the very best of luck and we’ll be watching!
