Rhasidat Adeleke is set to miss out on the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
The 22-year-old revealed that her season has ended due to recent injury setbacks, the details of which are unspecified.
She had qualified for the Tokyo championships in both the 200m and 400m races but has struggled to replicate the form of her previous seasons.
In an Instagram post, she announced that she would be unable to compete.
"This season has tested me in more ways than I ever anticipated," wrote Adeleke.
"Lingering injuries & continuous setbacks made it increasingly difficult to train & perform at the level I expect from myself.
"Following yet another recent roadblock, I’m saddened to share that I’m unable to finish out this season," she added.
The athlete continued: "I’ll take this time to heal, recover and do what’s necessary so I can show up next season as my best self, mind and body.
"I’m so grateful to everyone that shows me unwavering support. It means the world."
The Dublin woman won a silver medal in Rome last year at the European championships.
She would have been aiming for her first medal at the world level, after fourth-place finishes at both the Olympic final and at the last World Championships in Budapest two years ago.
Adeleke shared that she has been unable to reach the performance level of 2023 and 2024, sharing her season's best 400m time of 50.42 which is well off the 49.07 she achieved in Rome last summer.
