5 cardigans we’re obsessed with this spring

Sarah McKenna Barry

With the right cardi, it’s hard to go wrong.

Ah, the humble cardigan. So versatile, so wholesome, so cosy. What’s not to love?

Cardigans certainly had a bit of a moment last year when Taylor Swift released her smash-hit song named in honour of the knitted garment.

Indeed, Swift’s impact was great. Demand for Aran jumpers surged as her album Folklore remained at the top of the charts.

But they were iconic before Taylor touched them, and they’ll be iconic in years to come.

The American actor Steve McQueen put them on the map when he wore the garment both on and off-screen throughout the sixties. George Barris famously photographed Marilyn Monroe wearing nothing but a woolly cardi on the beach in 1962. And, as Cher Horowitz in Clueless, Alicia Silverstone ruled the school in a classic yellow cardi.

The universal appeal of the cardigan is unsurprising. At their most basic, they’re excellent at keeping you warm. The cardigan is also perfect for all seasons. During those cold months, they’re frankly essential, but when the weather is warmer, they make a great substitute for a light coat or jacket.

Additionally, they tend to be quite well-made. If you splurge on a pricier cardi, it’ll stick with you for a long time. And hey, even if there is wear and tear, they’re handy enough to mend.

Beyond that, however, cardigans should be the staple of anyone’s wardrobe. They go with anything – jeans, skirts, you name it. You can also dress them up or dress them down, depending on the occasion.

With that being said, here are five cardis we can’t wait to get our hands on this spring.
