We need more celebrities like Alicia Silverstone in this world
The pressure on women to look like they're frozen in time has been around for longer than we care to accept.
It's a pressure that the generations before us and the generations after us will have to deal with, but it's also societal pressure many of us are trying to let go of.
How we look is one of the least interesting parts of who we are, but it's the one thing society is obsessed with.
It may be prevalent in our normal lives, but it lingers over Hollywood like a dark cloud.
Celebrities are now getting facelifts in their forties in a bid to hold onto their youthful looks, and it's honestly a little depressing.
Our TikTok feeds are now full of plastic surgeons guessing what procedures Anne Hathaway and Emma Watson have had done, and we can't help but wonder if we should follow in their footsteps.
I keep catching myself looking at the wrinkles around my eyes for longer than usual or analysing the frown lines on my forehead more than before.
This stuff suddenly weighs on your mind a little more once you blow out the candles on your 30th birthday cake, but deep down, I know it doesn't matter.
Thankfully, Alicia Silverstone reminded me that aging naturally is perfectly fine.
The Clueless actress recently told Byrdie that she is interested in aging naturally.
Alicia Silverstone told the publication: “I have lines. I don’t know. I’m curious to see what happens. I’d like to be an example [of what that would look like].”
"As I age, I’m aware that I don’t look like everybody else, but I don’t lose sleep over it. I don’t prioritize it that much... I’m having too much fun."
Silverstone believes her vegan diet has a lot to do with her natural glow.
"I only have so much time. I want to look my best, but I don’t care enough. And I don’t think anything that you put on is going to do what the inside does — that radiance, that glow, that joy."
It shouldn't surprise us to hear a celebrity, especially a woman, speak about aging in such a positive way, but it stopped me in my tracks.
Aging is something we've all been running from, something that has been normalised by society too, with Botox and fillers becoming as common as getting your nails done.
And although there's no shame in these treatments, especially if you get them to feel good, we should also embrace aging naturally, too.
Silverstone's honesty about how little the lines on her face matter reminds me to realise how wasteful it is to focus on the aging process.
Like Silverstone, I want to invest time in actually enjoying life rather than fixating on fine lines on my forehead.
