Amal Clooney was apparently warned by Egyptian officials that she risked arrest after drawing attention to flaws within their judicial system.
In a report from February 2014 the human rights barrister reportedly identified a number of issues which lead to the conviction of three al-Jazeera journalists, one of whom she is now representing.
She told The Guardian: “When I went to launch the report, first of all they stopped us from doing it in Cairo.
“They said: ‘Does the report criticise the army, the judiciary, or the government.’ We said: ‘Well, yes.’ They said: ‘Well then, you’re risking arrest.’”
Clooney put the report together, before getting involved in the case which saw the three journalists sentenced to between seven and 10 years in prison, for the International Bar Association.
Amal and George got married last year.
