Actress Michelle Pfieffer has revealed that she was once part of a cult that was run by two personal trainers.
According to the actress who spoke to The Sunday Telegraph, the trainers were on a mission to bring humans into “their highest state" and encouraged followers to live on a diet "nobody can adhere to."
Members of the group were known as Breatharians, who believed that they didn’t have to eat or drink because the sun provided them with nourishment.
''They were very controlling”
said the 55-year-old.
“I wasn't living with them but I was there a lot and they were always telling me I needed to come more. I had to pay for all the time I was there, so it was financially very draining.''
The actress said that she only came to the realisation that she was in a cult when her ex-husband Peter Horton was researching for his role on
The Moonies (the name given to followers of Rev Moon Sun-Myung's unification church).
''We were talking with an ex-Moonie and he was describing the psychological manipulation and it just clicked” she recalled.
Breatharianism has been largely criticised over the years and has been linked to a number of deaths.
