Ant McPartlin diagnosed with ADHD following drink driving car accident last year

Ant McPartlin was diagnosed with ADHD following last year’s car accident.

The TV presenter said that he didn’t realise he had the condition until he received a medical diagnoses after the crash.

McPartlin was arrested and fined £86,000 following the drink driving incident in early 2018.

He said that his ADHD diagnosis “makes sense” as there is often a link between the condition and alcohol-dependency in adults.

Speaking to The Sun, he said:

“I never knew that until afterwards. I was so thoroughly examined and diagnosed, I found stuff out about me I hadn’t addressed for years.”

“There are a lot of links to alcohol-dependency, which I studied a lot when I was away.”

McPartlin spent time in a rehab facility following his accident last year. He also took a break from hosting duties allowing Holly Willoughby to take reigns alongside Dec on the most recent series of I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.

The 43-year-old said that when it comes to his job, his condition can actually be quite beneficial, but when it comes to his personal life, it’s a little more problematic.

“In my job, having what they call ‘popcorn thinking’ is good because it means you can jump from one thing to another,” he said.

“Professionally it’s brilliant. Personally I’m all over the place. I need to be cared for and looked after. I need to be aware of things more and I am now.”

Ant said that he’s hoping being candid about his condition will encourage more middle-aged men to speak out about mental illness.

“In our day-to-day lives we’re not very introspective – especially not British northern blokes,” he explained.

“There will be so many others who will be struggling and my heart goes out to them.”
