Benedict Cumberbatch Pens Apology Letter after Missing Funeral of 14-Year-Old Fan

A thoughtful gesture.

Benedict Cumberbatch always comes across as a really nice guy and his latest gesture is a very thoughtful one.

The British actor wrote a letter to the parents of a 14-year-old Sherlock fan, explaining that he was deeply sorry to have missed her funeral.

The letter was read out during Eve Shepherd’s funeral where mourners wore deerstalker hats to signify the teenager’s love of the BBC show.

It read: “I send my deepest sympathies to Eve’s family. To lose someone so young who fought for her health all her life must be beyond endurance.

“I hope they can take solace from the fact that she was clearly much loved and her support of our show is hugely appreciated and shall be remembered.

“I wish I could be there but sadly am filming the show she loved. God rest her soul. With all my love and sympathies, Benedict xxx”.

The 14-year-old passed away earlier this month after having breathing difficulties.

Cheshire native Eve was born prematurely at 28 weeks and doctors believed she would not survive any longer than 24 hours.

During her life she had over 200 operations including the fitting of a tracheotomy tube to assist her with breathing.

Speaking to The Sun, Eve’s father Mark said: “Eve would find this funny as she was a big TV and film fan. She’d be so happy about the letter from Benedict, she was a huge fan.”
