It has been revealed that U2 frontman Bono underwent five hours of surgery this week following a biking accident in Central Park in New York on Sunday.

It has been reported that the injuries the singer suffered were actually a lot more serious than initially thought. The Rolling Stone has reported that Bono crashed at the weekend while attempting to avoid another cyclist in the park and was then rushed to hospital where he underwent five hours of surgery.

The singer, who had taken part in this year’s Band Aid single the day before, reportedly suffered from six fractures including a fracture in his face near his eye, in his left shoulder blade, his little finger and his elbow.

According to The Rolling Stone, surgeon Dean Lorich explained that a “nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone repaired with three metal plates and 18 screw.”

The band were forced to postpone a week-long residency on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as a result.
