The nickname could be a nod to Doria Ragland.

With another new arrival to the royal family, Meghan and Harry’s newborn daughter’s name might mean more than we initially thought.

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor is the newest addition to the family, but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are planning to use the nickname “Lili” instead.

The couple named their daughter after Harry’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth, whose family nickname is Lilibet, and also his late mother Princess Diana – but that might not be all.

Fans on Twitter however think that the shortened version of her name, Lili, is a nod to Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland, as she used the nickname “flower” for Meghan when she was younger.

According to Marie Claire, Meghan wrote in a since deleted blog post in 2016 on The Tig saying that her mother used the nickname when she was a child, and her uncle told The Sun that Doria still uses it to this day.

In 2019 he was speaking to The Sun about when Doria first found out about her daughter dating Harry, recalling that she said: “My little Flower! My Flower’s going to be a princess! Wooh-wooh!”

Fans are now diving in, trying to suss out if the name truly is a nod to Doria, with one saying: “I really like the name. Diana was pretty much a given as her second name. And they have both spoken about HM with love . I truly believe she has been kind to Meghan. Maybe the only one who was….

“Also like to think that “Lili” is a nod to Doria as she calls Meghan her flower.”

Another added: “Lilibet Diana is a beautiful name and full of tenderness toward Harry’s grandmother and mother. Calling her “Lili” is a nod to Doria’s incredible love for Meghan, who she nicknamed “Flower.””

The royal couple announced the birth of their second child over the weekend. They had their first son, Archie, in 2019.

“It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world,” reads a statement.

“Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA.

“She weighed 7lbs 11oz (3.5kg). Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.

“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”
