Hollyoaks’ Abi Phillips diagnosed with thyroid cancer

“I never thought I would be told that I have cancer at the age of 28.”

Actress Abi Phillips, who played Liberty Savage in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks, has told her fans that she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

Abi gave the update on Instagram yesterday evening.

She posted two photos of herself, which showed the before and after her biopsy. In her caption she explained that when she took the pictures, she had no idea that she would be receiving the news she got.

She wrote that when she first found two lumps in her neck, doctors assured her that she was probably just “getting over a cold”, or that it was a sign her body was “fighting something off”. However, she had her own concerns and booked herself in to see a specialist.

She was subsequently sent for a biopsy and some scans.

Abi wrote: “Fast forward two weeks and just before Easter weekend I had an appointment to see a consultant at the QE hospital who sat me down and told me that I had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and that I would need surgery and radiotherapy treatment.

“I never thought I would be told that I have cancer at the age of 28, you never think it’s going to happen to you.”

She then added that she wouldn’t have booked herself in to see a specialist, if she hadn’t seen Demi Jones‘ story, as the lumps the Love Island star posted looked very similar to her own.

Abi then urged her followers to be persistent with their own health.

She said: “If ever you find a lump or something unusual on your body, never just think it’s nothing, don’t be told that you’re fine by the GP and you’re ‘young’, always get things checked out by a specialist if you can and insist on tests even if it turns out to be nothing, as catching things early is crucial for a good prognosis.”

Abi finished up by telling her followers that she’ll be undergoing surgery next week.

“This time next week I’ll be on the road to recovery after my operation,” she wrote.
