‘It’s Like Having 55 Babies In Quick Succession’ – Kate Winslet Talks Post-Titanic Fame

"It isn't easy going through that level of exposure so quickly."

Kate Winslet has admitted she was left ‘shocked’ by the instant fame that she experienced following the release of Titanic.

In an interview with Radio 4, the actress said that she has been completely unprepared for the reaction to the groundbreaking film and did not have anyone who had gone through the same experience to turn to for support.

“It isn’t easy going through that level of exposure so quickly. What I do wish is that I had had more support going through those early days. It’s genuinely difficult. I was living in my lovely little two-bedroom flat in north London… and suddenly I couldn’t just walk down the street and buy a pint of milk,” she said.

“With things changing overnight, I wish I had known people who could have said ‘this is what’s going to happen’. I wish I’d known more people who had actually gone through that. It’s a shocker, that one. It’s like having 55 babies naturally in quick succession.”

She also revealed that she has gone to great lengths to protect her three children and make sure they do not grow up too quickly.

“And to stay a child, really, for as long as possible. That, I think, is the hardest thing for kids now, they seem to grow up so fast, simply because there’s so much exposure to the internet and the digital world. I mean we have none of that stuff. If I see another child under five playing on an iPhone, I will cry.”
