"To me it's a fun thing, it's the sort of thing I don't put a lot of thought into..."

James Franco defended a recent naked selfie he posted of himself to Instagram, telling David Letterman “it’s what the people want”.

Speaking on the David Letterman Show, the actor told the host:

“There’s a lot to get straight here and I don’t know if we even have time. To me it’s a fun thing, it’s the sort of thing I don’t put a lot of thought into, but it gets a lot of attention. I have a lot of followers on Instagram.”

Franco, who’s currently starring in the Broadway production of Of Mice and Men, has come under fire for posting a topless image of himself with his hands down his pants to his Instagram account.

So why post the provocative snaps? Well, the star tried to compare his decision to Britney Spears shaving her head, he told Letterman…

“Like that Britney Spears shaved head moment, where it’s sort of like, ‘All right, you want me? Here you can have me, but I am going to be really ugly.”

The 36 year old also believes his images have been sensibly circulated, as he chooses to post them to his personal account:

“It’s not like I’m putting that on billboards. I sensibly Instagrammed it for my fans, now the bloggers are following me on there. So they’ll just take it and use my images for whatever they want.

“I didn’t ask you to look at it, it’s what the people want. You don’t want to see it, don’t follow me. Don’t follow me on Instagram.”

This isn’t the first time the star has been challenged for his Instagram behaviour, after he was caught trying to pick up a 17-year old fan on the social media site.
