Never one to dodge the big issues, Pilkington's jokey response was straight to the point, if not a teeny bit controversial. He said: "It annoyed me that. There's only about 700 gorillas in the world and yet there's loads of kids."
He wasn't the only one to stick up for the gorilla. Long-term collaborator and fierce animals rights defender Ricky Gervais also had his say on social media. His tweet in the wake of the incident seemed to imply that the parents should take a share of the blame for what happened.
