Kate Garraway gives update as Derek takes an turn for the worse

Poor thing.

Kate Garraway has given an update on her husband Derek after she has pulled out from presenting Good Morning Britain this week.

Pulling out of her presenting gig this week, Kate said her husband Derek had taken a “very serious” turn.

Derek Draper was hospitalised in March 2020 at the very beginning of the pandemic when he was diagnosed with Covid-19 and ended up spending more than a year in ICU due to the damage the illness did to his organs.

The 54 year old was re-admitted to hospital earlier this month, with sources close to the family saying he remains “seriously unwell.”

“The family are very worried about him but Derek is in the best hands,” a source told The Sun.

His condition is currently being monitored by a leading specialist, with the insider saying that Kate is currently by his side and “keeping it together as best as she can.”

The source added that Kate had “no choice” but to take time off from the show and her radio show, saying: “This is an incredibly difficult time for her and their family.”

Derek was finally able to go home in April last year and has since been receiving 24 hour care from his home, but Kate, earlier this month, said that he is back in hospital but never mentioned why.

Kate has been very open about Derek’s condition since he was admitted to hospital in 2020, releasing two documentaries about his journey, Caring for Derek and Finding Derek.

Appearing on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in December, Kate was asked: “What has Covid done to your husband?”

She replied: “It’s devastated him. From the top of his head to the tip of his toe.

“His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system. We’re pretty sure that the inflammation did pass through the brain.

“He still can’t communicate, he still has issues with mobility. Fundamentally, he’s in a terrible state. But look, he’s alive.”
