Meghan and Harry’s first child may not get a royal title and the reason why seems unfair

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first child may not get a royal title.

The news that there’s another royal baby on the way has caused great excitement particularly as the couple have a rather large fan base.

However, interestingly, there’s a possibility that their first child will not automatically inherit a royal title and that’s where things start to get confusing.

Ats it stands, their first child will not inherit the title of prince or princess on birth, a stark difference in comparison to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Princess Louis.

royal title

This is because of what’s known as a Letters Patent, which was introduced in 1917 by King George V, and dictated that the royal title continues along the male line of inheritance, in this case, William as the eldest son.

This means that when Meghan and Harry’s children will be known as Lord/Lady when they are born unless the Queen steps in.

That’s explaining the current state of play in its simplest term but there appear to be a lot of complications surrounding royal titles and of course, these are subject to modifications if decided so by the powers that be.

The Queen could issue another Letters Patent as she did before the birth of Prince George which meant that when Princess Charlotte was born, she was entitled to the title of HRH Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

If the law had not been changed, Princess Charlotte would have been known as Lady Charlotte Mountbatten-Windsor.

The Queen may also do the same for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s children but of course, we’ll just have to wait and see what the monarch decides.
