Sad news.

Sad news on this Saturday, as Arthur Murphy has passed away at the age of 90.

The RTÉ TV and radio presenter was best known for hosting Mailbag.

Mailbag was on RTÉ One from 1982 to 1996 every Saturday evening.

The show dealt with viewers’ letters concerning RTÉ TV programmes and broadcasting in general.

Interestingly, Arthur Murphy also had a career as a pop singer and appeared on the same TV shows as Jimi Hendrix.

He also presented a number of shows in the UK before returning to Ireland.

Ray D’Arcy paid tribute to the RTÉ icon this morning, calling him “a true gentleman and a true professional”.

RTÉ producer Will Hanafin, who worked Arthur for a decade, tweeted a lovely tribute to the man.

“Really sad to tell you that the broadcasting legend #Arthurmurphy died yesterday. It was a privilege to write the emailbag script for him for ten years.”

“A consummate broadcaster and gentleman who lived an incredible life, sharing a stage with Jimi Hendrix.”

“He was produced by The Beatles producer George Martin, had a music career as Mark Dwayne, singing with Shirley Bassey, and of course presented mailbag on RTE from 1982…we’ll miss him…commiserations to his sons on their sad loss.”

Our thoughts are with the family at this time.
