Zooey Deschanel is being sued for allegedly injuring a horse by riding it too often.
According to TMZ, the New Girl star leased a stallion called Literati in 2013 and signed a contract agreeing that the animal would not be overworked and would be involved in "no more than 3 jumping lessons per week".
Deschanel is a keen horse riding enthusiast, regularly competing in events, and the horse's owner Patty Parker is claiming that the horse was "injured and unusable" when returned.
The horse is now in need of serious medical treatment and Ms Parker has taken the case to force the actress to pay for the veterinary bills.
Deschanel has yet to comment on the claims.
The 34-year-old will return to the big screen in two movies set for release in 2015, Rock The Kasbah and The Driftless Area.
She is currently dating film producer Jacob Pechenik.
