The logline for the show's pilot states: “When teenager Coral moves to a dreamy seaside town, she begins unraveling the truth behind her mother’s disappearance—and discovers her mother was a mermaid, awakening magical powers in Coral just as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface.”
In the film, best friends Claire and Hailey discover a mermaid named Aquamarine washed up on the beach after a violent storm. Fleeing an arranged marriage, she promises to grant them a wish if they can prove to her that true love exists.
Along with Emma Roberts, the film Aquamarine starred Joanna “JoJo” Levesque, Sara Paxton, Jake McDorman, and Arielle Kebbel.
Aquamarine is the latest film to be rebooted by Disney as a series. The company has previously given pilot orders to films such as Holes and Witch Mountain.
