Cate Blanchett saw off strong competition in the form of Emma Thompson, Judi Dench and Sandra Bullock to claim the female alternative for her role in Blue Jasmine.
Meanwhile Jennifer Lawrence was named Supporting Actress for American Hustle and Barkhad Abdi took home Supporting Actor for Captain Phillips.
As well as J-Law's individual win, David O. Russell’s American Hustle also won awards for Make Up & Hair along with Original Screenplay.
Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity had a very successful night earning him the award for Best Director as well as Outstanding British Film, Original Music, Cinematography, Sound and Special Visual Effects.
Other winners on the night included Philomena (Adapted Screenplay), Rush (Editing), Frozen (Animated Film), Kieran Evans (Oustanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer), The Great Beauty (Film Not in the English Language), Sleeping With the Fishes (The British Short Animation), Room 8 (British Short Film) and Will Poulter (EE Rising Star Award).Nicola Coughlan has joined the cast of Only Murders in the Building
