If you haven’t managed to catch Maleficent in the cinemas just yet, we would maybe suggest you don’t continue reading as there may be a couple of spoilers in here.

Angelina Jolie has spoken out about a controversial scene in the film which she has now confirmed was indeed a metaphor for rape.

Jolie was speaking to the BBC‘s Women’s Hour when she answered the question about the scene where her wings were cut off by the man she loved.

“We were very conscious, the writer and I, that [the scene in question] was a metaphor for rape,” Jolie said. “The core of [“Maleficent”] is abuse, and how the abused have a choice of abusing others or overcoming and remaining loving, open people.”

According to the Huffington Post, Jolie had issued the reply to a question about why Maleficent took her revenge on the King’s daughter.

The screenwriter, Linda Woolverton, also spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about the scene: “The biggest challenge [making the film] was how to make a villain into a protagonist. How on earth was I going to justify that this woman would curse a baby?”
