Behind the scenes look at Corrie factory collapse makes Rana’s death even more tragic

“They need to be literally ripped apart.”

Last night, Coronation Street proved that love is indeed dead when they decided to brutally kill off one half of the show’s most iconic and glorious couples.

Rana Habeed was tragically killed during Wednesday’s episode when the Underworld factory roof collapsed leaving her trapped.

She and Kate Connor had just exchanged wedding mere moments before.

In behind the scenes footage shared after the episode’s airing Faye Brooks, who plays Kate, said that Rana’s untimely death was the only way that she and Kate could have been torn apart.

“They’ve given us the most dramatic ending and everything we have so far, we try to give a truthful deliverance and make sure to keep the heart of Kana,” she said.

“We’re putting our heart and soul into this for the reason they are meant to be together. And we’re not doing it to destroy them, not doing it in a malicious way.”

This comes after the soap was criticised for playing on the ‘Bury Your Gays’ television trope, which sees TV shows and films kill off LGBT characters who are seemingly more “expendable” than their heterosexual counterparts.

Bhavna Limbachia, who plays Rana, disputes this argument, saying that the couple’s love made death the only way their relationship could possibly end.

“The main focus is that Kate and Rana’s love is so pure there’s no way Rana would have a sudden change of heart,” she said. “They need to literally be ripped apart.”

“There’s no way Rana would leave Kate. They were meant to be together so creatively this is the right decision regardless of gender or sexual preference.”

Limbachia said that when she opted to leave the soap, she knew her character would have to be killed off because there was no other way Rana would go.

“Kate and Rana had fought so hard to be together and they had been through thick and thin together,” she said.

“I believe their love was so pure as two souls that there was no way that Rana was just going to have a change of heart, hop in a cab and leave.”

Coronation Street continues on Sunday at 8pm.
