Chris Pine addresses the viral Harry Styles spitgate video

Ellen Fitzpatrick

Finally.

Chris Pine has given the internet the best gift of all time – he’s finally revealed what actually happened during the Harry Styles “spit gate” video.

A video went viral last year during the premiere of Don’t Worry Darling at the Venice Film Festival in September showing Harry seemingly “spitting” on Chris as he was sat next to him.

At the time, a representative for the actor shut down claims he had been “spat on” by the singer.

They told PEOPLE in a statement at the time: “This is a ridiculous story – a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation.

“Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.”

Now, Chris has addressed it for himself and confirmed that Harry did not spit on him after all.

Chris told Esquire: “[My publicist] wakes me up, in a, you know, in a state. She says, ‘We have to craft a message about what happened in Venice.’

”And I’m like ‘About what?’ ‘About Harry spitting on you.’ Which I have no idea what happened. She showed me the thing. It does look, indeed, like Harry spitting on me. He didn’t spit on me.”

”Because we had this little joke, because we’re all jetlagged, we’re all trying to answer these questions, and sometimes when you’re doing these press things, your brain goes all befuddled, you know, you start speaking gibberish, and we had a joke like, ‘It’s just words, man.’”

So there we have it, the case of “spit gate” can finally be put to rest.
