“This must have been the best kept secret in Derry.”

The third and final season of Lisa McGee’s Derry Girls made its highly anticipated return to our screens last night, much to the delight of loyal fans everywhere.

The touching comedy series follows the lives of five friends Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) and James (Dylan Llewellyn), as they come of age in the final years of the Troubles in Derry, Northern Ireland.

In last night’s episode, titled The Night Before, the teens were up to their usual shenanigans as they attempted to film a documentary about peace. However, after sneaking into school after-hours, they encountered two men clearing out computers, and innocently started helping them.

The gang then landed themselves in some serious trouble and were brought to the police station for interrogation.

While in custody, one of the policemen emerges from the shadows, and fans were gobsmacked to see Liam Neeson in a surprise cameo.

Needless to say, viewers jumped onto Twitter to share their reaction.

Comedian Paddy Raff shared an aerial photo of Ireland by night and wrote: “Satellites passing over Ireland at 21:33 GMT picked up a collective gasp in space when Liam Neeson popped up in #DerryGirls.”

One fan tweeted: “Still reeling from Liam Neeson’s sudden appearance #DerryGirls.”

A second wrote: “Absolutely brilliant, well worth the wait. And LIAM NEESON just casually having a cameo like it’s no big deal.”

A third applauded the Derry Girls team for managing to keep the surprise a secret.

“Keeping Liam Neeson’s guest appearance under wraps for this must have been the best kept secret in Derry,” they wrote.

If you somehow missed last night’s episode of Derry Girls, you can catch up on All 4, the Channel 4 player. Next week’s episode, titled The Affair airs next Tuesday, 19 April.
