Desperate Housewives could be coming back – but what could we expect from a reboot?

Tuesday nights were different when Desperate Housewives was on.

In my case, we went all out. I was allowed to stay up late, sipping hot chocolate with my mother as we attempted to keep up with the ladies of Wisteria Lane. The next morning, albeit a little groggy from that 11pm bedtime, the girls from my year would gather round the lockers to parse through last night’s events, and share laughs over jokes we never really fully understood.

It was a different time.

Thankfully, it seems those days are not fully behind us, because it looks like a Desperate Housewives reboot is finally happening.

Speculation that we’d be getting more from Susan (Teri Hatcher), Bree (Marcia Cross), Gabby (Eva Longoria) and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) first began to circulate around New Year’s, when the official Twitter account for Desperate Housewives posted a picture of the cast and wrote: “*Desperately* waiting for 2022.”

So, what would a Desperate Housewives reboot actually look like? To get an idea, it might be helpful to revisit the last season of the iconic show, and its very telling finale.

There, we see Lynette and Tom move to New York as she becomes CEO of a food company. Later, we see her attempt to put some manners on her six grandchildren in their swanky penthouse.

We then learn that Gabrielle and Carlos have left the lane, and the latter is seen helping the former run her new online shopping business, which eventually lands her her own TV show. Later, they retire to a huge mansion in California.

Bree, meanwhile, pursues a political career in Louisville, where she is elected to the Kentucky State Legislature.

Susan moves out of the lane with Julie and her granddaughter, but first welcomes newcomer Jennifer to the neighbourhood. As Susan drives off, she is greeted by the ghosts of Wisteria Lane, to presumably leave her chaotic past behind her. However, the drama is far from over as Jennifer stacks a mysterious metal box in her new home, and the voice of Mary Alice Young ominously tells us that secrets can rarely stay hidden.

Knowing Desperate Housewives, a reboot would definitely need to address Jennifer’s secret in one or another, and perhaps whatever she’s hiding may see the women return to Wisteria Lane for one last hurrah. A convoluted (and juicy) blackmail plot, for instance, could force the housewives to hurry back to the neighbourhood, and it will definitely be interesting to see if their chemistry has changed after all these years. Will they still have each other’s backs? Or could all these years apart mean that they might turn on one another?

We shall simply have to wait and see.
