The dog who plays Cheddar on Brooklyn Nine-Nine has passed away

Rory Cashin

“Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms”.

Over the seasons of the show so far, Cheddar has proven to be a pretty fantastic non-verbal supporting character.

The cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine have had to dog-sit her (and then lose her and go looking for), she was an integral part of one of the Halloween Heists, and was also used as a “Dog Bra” at one point.

Raymond Holt and Kevin Kozner raised her right, and to be honest, we liked her more than some of the bigger supporting crew (sorry Charles, this is just the way of it).

Which is why it pains us to say that the doggo that has played passed away, as per the Instagram post by the owner of Stewart (his real name), who was 11-years-old when he passed away. Which is 77 in doggo years, so that is pretty good innings!

While several different dogs played Cheddar over the years, Stewart has had the role since Halloween IV, and on his last day, his owner said “We went to the beach (his favourite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other’s company.

“Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean.”

Oh God, we really didn’t need this today…
