“Don’t Call Me Shirley” Eight Cult Classic 80s Movies We Still Love Today

They're all classics.

Sue Murphy

The 80s seem like they were so long ago but that is hard to believe when we have such vivid memories of some of the great movies of the time. From Ferris Bueller to The Goonies, the 80s produced plenty of brilliant cult classics. Here are eight of them.

1. The Goonies.

Arguably one of the best children’s films of all time, the Goonies revolved around a group of children who went off to discover gold after happening on a Pirate Map in the attic. Looking back now, the Goonies can seem terrifying and it certainly wouldn’t have been made today but it certainly brought endless entertainment to a generation who return to this film again and again. TRUFFLE SHUFFLE!

2. The Breakfast Club.

The quintessential Brat Pack film and the 80s classic which was somewhat responsible for the teenage high school film genre that now exists, The Breakfast Club is one of the most loved and critically acclaimed of all coming-of-age dramas. Over the course of an afternoon in detention, a group of teenagers who would not normally give each other the time of day, discover more to each other than they could have imagined and form an unlikely bond. Effortlessly sweet and funny, The Breakfast Club earns its place at the top of the Brat Pack heap. We still want the sequel!

3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Ever want to cut school? Well, we can assure you that Ferris Bueller inspired an entire generation to cut school, misbehave and maybe send a car out a window. Oh, if you could include a Beatles number too, that would be perfect. Another John Hughes classic, Ferris Bueller became THAT movie about your teenage years. The all-important one.

4. Back to the Future.

GREAT SCOTT! Admit it, when you saw Back to the Future first, you spent hours out looking for lightening in the hopes that you would find Doc. Of course, you never did but that absolutely never stopped you. The film that really kicked Michael J. Fox’s career into overdrive, Back to the Future certainly made us wish that we lived in the future it presented…

5. Gremlins.

Well, if you weren’t going around searching for lightening and for Doc, you were most certainly pestering your parents for a new toy called Gizmo that you could not feed after midnight under any circumstances. For many, Gremlins was almost a horror as it depicted little goblin like creatures running around and causing chaos. Now, it’s a comedy and a cult classic with a pretty great sequel to boot.

6. This Is Spinal Tap.

The numbers all go to eleven! If you watched This is Spinal Tap, we can completely forgive you for looking at musicians skeptically nowadays. How did they get away with it?! There are so many quotes in this masterpiece that you can use over and over again. This really deserves its position as a cult classic masterpiece.

7. Airplane.

DON’T CALL ME SHIRLEY! An aeroplane crew takes ill. Surely the only person capable of landing the plane is an ex-pilot afraid to fly. Of course, this does not go according to plan… if there even was a plan to go by.

8. Labyrinth.

If Labyrinth didn’t absolutely terrify you, we just don’t know what could have. It certainly made sure you never wished your younger brother would be whisked away to the Labyrinth King. Poor Sarah only had thirteen hours to get him back. It’s all too much really. Very stressful.
