EastEnders fan favourite Jean Slater is set to battle ovarian cancer in a heartbreaking upcoming storyline.

The Mirror report that Jean will begin to show symptoms of the disease next month, before she is diagnosed after visiting the doctor.

Her devastating diagnosis is said to be the reason that her son, Sean Slater, will be returning this spring.

The publication report that EastEnders is working with Macmillan Cancer Support to make sure that the storyline is handled correctly.

Gillian Wright, the actress who plays Jean, said that it was “an honour and huge responsibility” to be a part of the storyline that tackles the issue, which affects thousands of women and their families every year.

She said:

“I’m aware of the impact such stories can have. It’s important that we treat the issue of cancer diagnosis and treatment with huge sensitivity, dignity and respect.

“I hope the story helps awareness of the disease and is supportive to those affected.”

EastEnders boss Kate Oates explained that the diagnosis would impact every facet of Jean’s life, including her mental health.

She added:

“I know an actor of Gillian’s calibre will approach the story with great truth and depth.

“The Slaters are an amazing ensemble family and this story is a completely fresh subject for them to tackle.

“I know they will do it justice and raise awareness of such an important issue that affects so many people.”

Jean first appeared in EastEnders in 2004. She is the mum of Stacey and Sean.
