EastEnders fans are praising Stacey Slater and the writers of the show for the powerful monologue the character delivered this week.

Following the rape of friend Ruby Allen, Stacey is speaking to Martin about the realities of life for women today and how we face a “constant threat of sexual assault from men”.

The character, portrayed by Lacey Turner, tears up as she explains the threat women face on a daily basis and it struck a chord with viewers.

“You have no idea what it is like to be a woman in this world,” Stacey tells Martin.

“All the shouting and whistling and leering and touching. All the time.

“It’s like white noise. That’s why you don’t believe anyone like you, anyone you know could do this.”

Stacey’s monologue may have referenced the fictional world of Albert Square but it definitely rang true for many other women watching at home.

“We know that the bad man out there. He ain’t a stranger,” Stacey added.

“He’s the man you live with, who mows your lawn, who buys you a drink.

“He’s your mate, your boyfriend, your brother. The bloke you go clubbing with.

“Normal, everyday men, Martin. There the ones that hurt you, that rape you, that kill you.

“Do you know the most dangerous place for a woman to be? Home turf.

“That’s where the real monsters are.”

Viewers quickly commended the actress for her delivery of such an important speech and the showrunners for focussing on the story in the way they have.
