The season finale depicted Stannis' apparent grisly end.
However, many optimistic viewers speculated that the King lived on, considering there were no shots of the dead Stannis or even a bloody sword - instead the scene cut as Brienne raised the weapon.
With so many questions left unanswered, HBO have made moves to clear up at least SOME of the confusion, and have confirmed that the King is in fact dead.
Brienne of Tarth, played by Gwendoline Christie
The network recently published a book titled Game of Thrones: The Noble Houses of Westeros Seasons 1-5, a summary of what went on so far.
RTE TEN report that a passage confirming Stannis' death is included, and it goes like this:
"Stannis was killed outside of Winterfell by Brienne of Tarth, who wished to avenge Renly’s death.”
“Brienne killed Stannis.”
Many fans had accepted Stannis' fate after season five director David Nutter explained the reasoning behind not depicting the gory end.
The network have yet to confirm or deny the death of Jon Snow.
Back in June, he said: “It would have been gratuitous.
“You really got a sense that Stannis had nothing else to live for. Brienne’s lifelong mission had come to an end.
"It’s a situation in which Stannis was ready to die and prepared to die.”
Ah yeah, cut the artsy-fartsy stuff - yiz were just trying to confuse us!Explore more on these topics:
