The first look at the Party of Five reboot is here – and it will break your heart.

The ’90s drama is being rebooted by Freeform, and will premiere in North America in January 2020.

The original series followed the five Salinger siblings – Bailey, Charlie, Julia, Claudia and their little brother, Owen – and how they banded together after their parents were killed in a car accident.

The first look at the reboot is putting modern-day immigration policies at the forefront, with parents Javier and Gloria exchanging heartbreaking goodbyes with their children in a detention centre.

Emilio, Berto, Lucia and Valentina are asked to look after their youngest brother, Rafa, in the absence of their parents.

The heartbreaking clip ends as Javier, who is being escorted away with Gloria, tries to console his distraught son.

He tells him:

“You don’t remember. You were so tiny. We carried you across the desert, across the border. August. 106 degrees.

“We thought we were going to die there. And look at you.

“Here you are. You’re so big and smart and talented. You be what you want to be, OK? I’m so proud of you.”

Amy Lippman, one of the original series’ creators who is working on the reboot, previously explained how they had been waiting for a “reason” to do return to the concept of the show.

At the Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for the series, she said [via Variety]:

“As we began to see the political climate and stories like this on the front page of every newspaper, we began to realize that what we imagined as a family of orphan 25 years ago had transmogrified into a family of kids living without their parents.”
