Friday’s Late Late Show to raise funds for Ukraine

Sarah McKenna Barry

Tubridy will be joined by Ukrainians living in Ireland to share their perspective on the ongoing crisis.

Friday’s edition of The Late Late Show on RTÉ One will be dedicated to covering the ongoing crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Host Ryan Tubridy will be joined by Ukrainians living in Ireland, who will share their concerns for their friends and family members who are still in the country.

Additionally, the show will raise funds for Irish Red Cross’ Ukranian appeal. The organisation is currently working with partners in the country to provide food, medical support and shelter for those who have been displaced by the invasion.

Providing music for the evening is the Irish band Aslan and singer-songwriter Róisín Murphy.

Tubridy will also be joined by Scottish actor Alan Cumming, who will share his own thoughts on the ongoing situation.

The Late Late Show will air at 9:35pm on Friday 3 March on RTÉ One.

News of the special edition of the programme comes just after the UN refugee agency reported that one million people have fled Ukraine sine the Russian invasion began last week. This makes it the fastest move of refugees the world has seen in this century.

Yesterday, Ireland’s Minister for Justice Helen McEntee said that 143 Ukrainians have now taken refuge in Ireland since a visa requirement was waived last Thursday, with the number rising to 269 since yesterday.

She told the Dáil that the EU is poised to trigger a previously unused measure to coordinate a mass influx of refugees.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney, meanwhile, has said that Ukrainians coming into Ireland will get a special refugee status that will allow them to live and work here as EU citizens despite the country not having EU status.
