Gabrielle Union was NOT HAPPY with how one headline referred to her

Orlaith Condon

Are they for real?

Gabrielle Union is an actress, author, activist and model and has been a recognisable face on our screens since the 90s.

Starring in cult classics like Bring It On and 10 Things I Hate About You, we’ve grown up watching the actress star in some of the biggest hits of our generation.

Most recently, however, Union donated $200,000 to an anti-gun violence campaign, March For Our Lives – a move that has been praised far and wide by those who support the movement.

But for one news outlet, that wasn’t enough to make her a recognisable name and they instead built their headline around another part of her life – her relationship with basketball player, Dwyane Wade.

Yes, the actress has been married to the Miami Heat player since 2014, but it hardly ranks as one of her greatest accomplishments.

“Dwyane Wade’s wife donates $200,000 to student-ran gun control rally,” read the headline from WSVN 7 News.

The headline was quickly criticised by many who came to the defence of the star and began listing off Union’s long-list of skills.

Gabrielle herself also took the time to call out the news outlet, saying:

“When they let you know what they think of you. I have a name.”

Her post was liked over 170,000 times and has been retweeted by nearly 50,000 people, and WSVN 7 News has been forced to make a statement.

“We have apologised to Gabrielle Union and the writer who posted the tweet has been disciplined.”

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time a headline like this has anchored a woman’s success off their husband’s name.

But thankfully there are those that also get it just right.
