Gavin & Stacey’s Ruth Jones switches on Barry’s Christmas lights as Nessa

Iconic.

It’s been almost an entire decade since our screens have been graced with the genius that is Gavin & Stacey.

The BBC sitcom, detailing the trails and tribulations of a long distance relationship stretching from Barry, Wales to Essex, England, has amassed a bit of a cult following since it first aired back in 2007.

And now, it’s returning for a Christmas special.

Class.

But before we all get to sit down with the Wests and the Shipmans once again, Gavin & Stacey writer and co-creator Ruth Jones has done us all a solid and turned on the Barry Christmas lights.

In the character of Nessa, nonetheless.

A video shared by local radio station Bro Radio shows Jones reprising her role as the iconic, eccentric, hysterically funny Nessa as she switches on the lights, notices a lot of exes present in the crowd, and drops the line we’ve been waiting nine years to hear.

“Ow, what’s occurin’?” she asked the crowd while on stage at Barry’s annual Christmas lights event in King Square.

“Cracking to see you all tonight,” she added. “Have you got nothing better to do?”

This year’s Gavin & Stacey Christmas special was announced earlier this year by Jones and fellow writer James Cordon.

The sitcom, starring Joanna Page, Mathew Horne, Cordon, and Jones, has been off the air for almost nine years following three series and one Christmas special.

Cordon revealed this year that he and Jones had been considering returning to the characters for a while, and that now felt like the right time.

“Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin & Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like,” he said. “And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special.”

“We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy.”
