Grease is coming back to cinemas across Ireland for one night only

Keeley Ryan

The T-Birds and Pink Ladies of Rydell High are back.

40 years after it was first released, Grease is the word once again…or for one night, at least.

The classic film is set to hit the big screen at Odeon Cinemas across the country on April 19 at 8.15pm.

If you fancy heading along, tickets to the special screening of the rom-com are available to prebook now at odeoncinema.ie – and we reckon they’ll be gone in a flash.

One of the most beloved and biggest films of all time first hit cinema screens in 1978 – as did its multi-million selling soundtrack, which included the likes of the unforgettable Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted to You and You’re the One That I Want.

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John led the all-star cast as Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, two teenagers who meet on a summer holiday and are reunited when Sandy enrols at Rydell High.

But when Danny brags about Sandy to his T-Bird friends, she’s humiliated and wants nothing to do with him – and he goes to great lengths to win her back.

And it turns out that the movie’s big, heartbreaking ballad (which has probably been belted out into hairbrushes across the globe thouuuusnads of times) was only added to the film after everything had wrapped up.

Hopelessly Devoted To You was written after producers felt that Olivia Newton-John needed a big number for the film.

The song then went on to get nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1978.
