Her Classic Movie Of The Week… Death Becomes Her

I have a hole in my stomach!

Sue Murphy

Every week, we in Her.ie towers will provide you with a blast from the past, a film that you cannot live without but nor should you, the classic film that you simply need to watch.

This week we take a look at an old favourite here in Her.ie towers and arguably one of the greatest scripts we have ever seen make it to the big screen, Death Becomes Her.

Now, Death Becomes Her is not one of those out and out classics, those films that if you went to film school they would insist you watch to get a greater understanding of film. No, Death Becomes Her is more of a cult classic, a film that did just fine at the box office but was really discovered on “video” and on TV.

Starring Meryl Streep as Madeline and Goldie Hawn as Helen, the film revolves around two rival women who are competing in life for the attention of men, their careers and to basically get one over on each other.

However, when Helen discovers the secret to eternal youth and of course, manages to look way younger than Madeline, events spin out of control and Mad finds herself taking a potion from a crazy lady who follows “a spring.”

Besides the simply brilliant performances from Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep, the script is the real winner here which includes some of the best insults and arguments you will ever see on the silver screen.

Bruce Willis as the love interest is simply hilarious; a plastic surgeon who has relationships with both the women, but ends up hating them both.

The special effects for the time are also fantastic, even managing to win an Oscar. That image of Goldie Hawn with a hole in her stomach will stay with you forever.

If you haven’t seen it, you simply must.
