Every week, we in Her.ie towers will provide you with a blast from the past, a film that you cannot live without but nor should you, the classic film that you simply need to watch.
This week, we take a look at the one of the movies that we have definitely all seen from our childhoods, My Girl.
Released in 1991, My Girl certainly captured the hearts of pretty much everyone it encountered. Starring Macaulay Culkin and Anna Chlumsky, the film followed the beautifully sweet friendship of Vada and Thomas, arguably one of cinema's most adorable coming-of-age young couples.
Culkin came to the project following the massive success of Home Alone which was released in 1990 and so was now a pretty big hit in Hollywood but it really was Chlumsky who stole the show.
Vada is obsessed with death following the death of her mother and the fact that her father works as a funeral director doesn't seem to help. Her poor father, Harry, just doesn't seem to understand that his daughter is beginning to age but despite his faults, he loves his daughter and always tries his best. Surprisingly, Vada, after a period of distance, begins to bond with his new love interest, Shelly.
While Vada begins to grow up, her relationship with her best friend Thomas J. Sennett starts to change. Thomas is obviously infatuated with her but being a hypochondriac, he finds it difficult to make other friends. Vada is his entire life.
If you have seen My Girl, you will know that something happens that will inevitably feel like you have punched in the stomach. This film is heartbreaking in every single way almost to the point where you begin to curse yourself for ever sitting down to watch it.
With some wonderful performances and an absolutely beautifully written script, you need to check this out. Just make sure you have the tissues.
