Here’s all the best movies on TV this Christmas Eve

It's CHRISTMAS!

Niamh Maher

Ho, Ho, Holy baby Jesus thank God it’s Christmas!

After the year we’ve had, there’s not a soul on this earth that doesn’t deserve to sit back, relax and watch back-to-back movies this fine Christmas Eve. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the anticipation of anything is usually better than the actual event and Irish TV doesn’t disappoint as it delivers some jam-packed festive cheer today as we all await the impending arrival of the man in red.

We’ve rounded up a list of some of our favourite movies on TV today so, sit back, relax, and let the Christmas spirit wash over you:

Hook 9.35 – Sky One

The 1991 classic starring Dustin Hoffman and the legendary Robin Williams is a Christmas staple in our house. This action-adventure flick, directed by Steven Spielberg, follows a grown Peter Pan as he travels back to Neverland in search of his children. It’s an absolute banger(ang).

Singin’ In The Rain 15.45 -RTÉ 2

What a glorious feeling! Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor, Singin’ In The Rain is the all-singing, all-dancing 1952 romantic comedy classic. Set in the 20s the movie follows three Hollywood stars as they make the transition from silent movies to “talkies”. Frequently ranked in ‘top movies of all time lists’, who are we to argue with history?

Elf 18.15 – Sky One

This 2003 masterpiece was directed by Jon Favreau and stars Will Ferrell, James Caan, Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen, Bob Newhart and Ed Asner. Elf centres on Buddy, a human who was adopted and raised by Santa’s elves. Need we say more?

The Commitments 21.00 – Virgin Media One

This 1991 musical comedy-drama based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Roddy Doyle is iconic amongst the Irish. A young music fan assembles a group of youths to form a soul band and hilarity ensues. Sprinkle in a dash of 90s Glen Hansard for some extra spice and you’re onto a winner.

Dirty Dancing 22.15 – TG4

It’s fair to say, we’ve all been put in a corner this past year and we certainly HAVEN’T had the time of our lives, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy this classic love story starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Set in the summer of 1963, this coming-of-age 1987 tale gives us romance, turmoil, scandal, dancing and, of course, a ridiculously strong soundtrack. It’s the perfect film to round off your Christmas Eve.

Happy watching!
