Instagram issues apology after removing film poster of a nipple

They have also restored the posts.

Instagram has issued an apology after they banned Penelope Cruz’s latest film poster due to it showing a lactating nipple.

The poster for Pedro Almodóvar’s new film Madres Paralelas starring the actress shows a female nipple in it, and for anyone that doesn’t know, Instagram has banned any photos of the #FreeTheNipple movement on their platform.

While this ban is only targeted towards females nipples and not males, the film’s poster was removed for this very reason.

The poster’s designer has since complained about Instagram censoring it, with Facebook, who owns Instagram, saying that the images were removed due to “breaking our rules against nudity.”

But in a statement, the company apologised for removing them, saying: “We do, however, make exceptions to allow nudity in certain circumstances, which includes when there’s clear artistic context.

“We’ve therefore restored posts sharing the Almodóvar movie poster to Instagram, and we’re really sorry for any confusion caused.”

The film stars Penelope as Janis and Milena Smit as Ana, two single mothers, one middle aged and one only a teenager.

The pair develop a friendship when they give birth at the same hospital on the same day, while having two different views on motherhood.

Despite knowing the poster may cause issues on different social media networks, designer Javier Jaén insisted on staying true to his vision.

He said: “He [director Pedro Almodóvar] told me that he had made films with posters his whole life, long before Instagram, and he would keep doing so after Instagram, too.

“This is probably the first image I saw when I was born. A company like Instagram tells me my work is dangerous, that people shouldn’t see it, that it’s pornographic. How many people are they telling that their body is bad, that their body is dangerous?

“They say their technology can’t differentiate the context. I don’t care. Change your technology then.”
