Chris Evans has denied rumours that he is due to replace Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear if the presenter does not return to the show.

Evans spoke out today on BBC Radio 2, branding the rumours as “absolute nonsense”.

“This is not true,” he stated. “Not only is it not true, it’s absolute nonsense.

“From what I’ve seen on Twitter and various social media, there’s a 50/50 split approximately as to whether me being involved in the show is a good idea.”

Clarkson was recently suspended from the show.

“In TV or radio, if you get a 50/50 love/hate reaction that usually equals a massive hit,” he continued. “I used to work for BARB [ratings body] and knock on people’s doors and this was the rule of thumb.”

“However, I’m in the no camp,” he added. “So regardless of whether it would be a hit, I’m voting a no for myself on that show, so that’s never going to happen.

“And that’s the end of that. Now all the people waiting outside can go and have a cup of tea somewhere.”

An update from the BBC about Clarkson’s future with the programme is expected in the coming days.
