It’s official! A Mary Poppins reboot is happening and we have a release date

Great news!

A few months back there were rumours that a Mary Poppins reboot was on the way.

It was also suggested that Emily Blunt was in talks to star as the lead role and now it’s been confirmed that it is, in fact, coming back and that Emily will play Mary.

It’s going to be set in a depression-era London, 20 years after the original film, when Mary Poppins is needed at the Banks house to help overcome a family tragedy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be called Mary Poppins Returns and will see Emily starring alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda in the sequel directed by Rob Marshall (Into The WoodsChicago).

Disney has also announced that it will be released on December 25th, 2018. This is presumably the US release date so the Irish one should be soon after that.

Rob Marshall released this statement about the movie, “I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation.”
