KJ Apa explains the reason behind that major cliffhanger in Riverdale’s season three

Keeley Ryan

Remember the end of Riverdale’s third season?

In case you need a refresher of what went down, it all ended with the Fab Four sharing a milkshake toast at Pop’s, promising that their senior year wouldn’t involve them having to solve any murders.

A totally fair wish for their last year of high school – although it’s fairly grim that they’d even have to make that promise.

But then the episode flashed forwarded to their senior year spring break, with a blood-soaked Archie, Betty and Veronica throwing their clothes into a big bonfire.

They promise that they’re never going to speak of “this” again, before Archie throws Jughead’s beanie into the blaze.

The scene (pretty understandably) left fans concerned about Jughead’s fate – particularly as he was nowhere to be found.

But KJ Apa revealed that the fact that it was only Betty, Veronica and Archie doesn’t necessarily mean bad news for Jughead – it just means Cole Sprouse was really, really cold that night of filming.

Yes, during an interview with TVLine at the San Diego Comic Con earlier this year, the Kiwi actor revealed his co-star had been “too cold” to go film that night.

“The only reason why the hat was [in the fire] was because Cole was cold that night,” KJ said, while Lili Reinhart – who plays Betty Cooper – added, “It was scripted all four of us and he was like, ‘I don’t wanna do it,’ so he didn’t.”

The Riverdale stars confirmed that the original plan had been for the four to be standing around a fire, and to throw their clothing in.
