“Life is too short. Do not be afraid to take action to protect your mental health.”

Former Love Island contestant and mental health advocate Dr Alex George has deactivated his Twitter account in order to safe-guard his mental well-being.

Taking to Instagram, Alex clarified that he hadn’t been trolled, but made the decision to delete in order to draw boundaries for himself.

He shared a screenshot that showed his account had been deleted and wrote: “I have decided to delete my @twitter account. I believe we should all take the necessary steps to protect our mental well-being and be brave in creating boundaries where this could be affected.

“I have not made this decision because I have been trolled. Most of what I see on that platform is negative and demotivating.”

He continued: “Life is far too short. Do not be afraid to take action to protect your mental health. You have that right.

“Social media has incredible power for good if used correctly and I am so proud of the community we have here.”

He signed off his caption with the hashtag “CancelNegativity”.

It seems Alex wasn’t alone in his feelings towards Twitter.

Love Island winner Amber Gill echoed his sentiments in the comments section and wrote: “Twitter is such a toxic place.”

Since his time on Love Island, Dr Alex has been outspoken about the need to reform mental health in the UK as the Ambassador for Mental Health to Downing Street.

Additionally, he has called for the end of online abuse, citing the damage it can do.

Earlier this summer, when Chloe Burrows received death threats online, Alex issued a statement saying that he was “shocked and appalled”.

In a post on Instagram, he wrote: “There is no justification for online bullying and abuse. Before you send hateful vitriol, have a little think, what if that was your brother or sister receiving that. What is that was your child on the end of that hate?

“THINK before you type. Be kind. Always.”
