Luther officially came to an end in 2019 after nearly a decade on the air. The psychological crime drama proved massively popular with audiences and critics alike, bagging itself 11 Emmy nominations over the years.
Elba himself has also been awarded a Critics' Choice Television Award, a Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in the series.
The actor first teased the possibility of a Luther film a few years back. When chatting to LADBible he said: "For me it would be nice to take Luther up a scale. Make the storyline bigger, make it slightly more international."
