Cathy Donohue

Unorthodox

Unorthodox has just landed on Netflix and is already receiving rave reviews.

As we’re restricted to staying at home right now, TV and film recommendations are most welcome and thankfully, there have been some fantastic releases of late.

If you’re currently in-between shows and aren’t sure what to start next, Unorthodox is well worth a watch.

The official description reads:

“A Hasidic Jewish woman in Brooklyn flees to Berlin from an arranged marriage and is taken in by a group of musicians — until her past comes calling”.

Its producers have been credited for treating this subject in such a sensitive manner and it’s already getting excellent reviews with many commenting on Shira Haas’s acting ability.

Shira plays Etsy and the series documents her journey from leaving a Hasidic Jewish community in Williamsburg to starting a new life in Berlin.

Etsy slowly settles into her new surroundings and becomes accustomed to a sense of freedom – it’s a show that will shed light on what it’s like to live in such a suppressed environment.

A TV adaptation of Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots. by Deborah Feldman, it’s based on a true story and life experiences Feldman herself went through.

Unorthodox is a story of hope and bravery and in these uncertain times with a global pandemic changing life as we know it, it will provide a sense of escapism and ultimately, provide an uplifting message. Something we could all do with right about now.

Here’s what people have been saying about the series thus far.
