There was disappointing news for Fifty Shades fans today, amid claims that Universal Pictures has yet to commit to making a sequel to the hugely-popular movie.

The big screen adaptation of E.L. James’ novel broke records at the Irish box office but a spokesperson for director Sam Taylor-Johnson has quelled speculation over the release of sequels based on the remaining two novels in the trilogy, telling Daily Express Online that the green light has yet to be given by the studio.

“The studio have not committed to a sequel as yet,” she said.

The comment is sure to cause confusion among fans, as it had been believed that Taylor-Johnson confirmed the sequels at a preview event last Friday.

The statement comes hot on the heels of claims that the 47-year-old “wants out” of making Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed following a series on blazing on-set rows with author James.

“Sam won’t be back for the Fifty Shades sequels. She wants out and Universal knows that’s the right decision,” a source told The Sun.
