Notting Hill 2 won’t happen but something even better might

Laura Holland

This would be amazing.

One of my favourite movies of all time is Notting Hill. So, when I sat down with the director Roger Michell, to chat about his latest project, My Cousin Rachel which is in cinemas now, I couldn’t resist bringing it up.

It’s almost been 20 years since its release but it’s still as brilliant as ever to watch.

These days it seems like every movie and TV show is making a return in the form of a reboot or sequel so I thought I’d float the idea with Roger to see if he has any plans to revisit the lives of William Thacker and Anna Scott.

His answer, which broke my heart, was “no”. Fair enough, though, as bringing it back might take away from how special the first one was.

All hope is not lost, though, as Roger did tell me about something else that could be in the pipeline. He said that he’s thinking about doing a recut of the original movie. The original movie was 3 and a half hours long and they ended up cutting lots of it, including most of Rhys Ifans’ scenes because he wasn’t as well known back then.

Another scene which also got the chop revolved around his daughter who played a minor role. He made the ballsy decision to cut out his own daughter for the betterment of the movie. Something he says she still holds against him (we can see why).

So it will basically be like a new version – happy days.

Roger also spoke about My Cousin Rachel and how similar the main character is to the Mona Lisa – you never know what she is thinking or plotting.
