Peppa Pig has introduced its first ever same sex couple

Ellen Fitzpatrick

So good to see.

Children’s TV series Peppa Pig has introduced its first ever same sex characters on the show.

In the 41st episode of season seven that aired on Channel 5 in the UK yesterday, the episode called Families saw Penny the polar bear and her two mums be introduced.

The scene showed Peppa Pig and her classmates being asked by their teacher to draw pictures of their families to hang on the wall of the classroom.

As each student shows theirs off, they need to describe to each other what their families do for work and their characteristics.

Penny draws up her family, showing two female polar bears wearing dresses.

She tells her classmates: “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy.

“One mummy is a doctor, and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”

Teacher Madame Gazelle responds: “Lovely, Penny.”

Penny’s mums are then shown at the end of the episode as they arrive at the school to pick up Penny along with all the other parents.

Many viewers of the show took to Twitter to praise the new addition and the decision to add an LGBTQ+ family to the show.

One person said: “PEPPA PIG HAS DONE MORE FOR THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY THAN DREAM WILL EVER.”

Another wrote: “An autistic character in Thomas the Tank Engine and a kid with two mums in Peppa Pig … it’s been a good day for representation!”

A third wrote: “THIS is how young children should be taught about inclusion.

“We don’t need to talk to them about sexuality. Just show all types of families. They’ll understand the rest when it’s appropriate.”

Thomas & Friends, which also airs on Channel 5, has announced that it will introduce its first ever autistic character who has been created alongside autistic writers and organisations.

Bruno the Brake Car is set to be voiced by nine-year-old autistic actor Elliott Garcia and set to be introduced from September 21st.
