The supernatural CW drama, based on the book series of the same name by L.J. Smith, is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, a town charged with supernatural history since its settlement of migrants from New England in the late 19th century.
It follows the life of Elena Gilbert, a teenage girl who has just lost both parents in a car accident, as she falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore.
But their relationship becomes increasingly more complicated when Stefan's older brother, Damon, returns to town - and has a plan to bring back their past love, Katherine.
The Vampire Diaries ran for eight seasons, spanning 171 episodes and two spin-offs (including the currently-airing Legacies).
